My father brought me up in fear of being unemployed

Find out about the job market

It's amazing to hear that unemployment figures have hit a record low

I was born in 1975, which makes me 42 - I can do maths.
It's amazing to hear that unemployment figures have hit a record low, meaning they've never been lower in my entire lifetime!

Whilst the figures are something many will discuss long into the night, I fear they mask the reality that many are in education, and increasingly the definition 'employment' is a blurred line, as with zero hours contracts.

The fact remains that the jobs market is the best it’s ever been.

Looks like you were wrong Dad.

the unemployment rate dipped from 4.6 per cent to 4.5 per cent in the three months to May, defying a forecast of no change and hitting a 42-year low. It means the UK is now at its “natural rate” of unemployment according to forecasts from the Bank of England.
